【Kaywoodie】美國老牌煙斗製造大廠出品，石楠木~微彎直式煙斗。

保存良好完整度佳，已依手工斗工法工序整體大翻新完畢外觀很優。

燃燒室與斗缽口沒燒蝕碳化崩塌，斗嘴手工打磨烏黑晶亮沒有咬痕。

斗長 : 13.5，  斗高 : 4.4，  斗寬 : 3.1，  斗口 : 1.8 公分。

屬中型斗，一斗菸草可享受30分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙到頭段4mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

斗身輕盈適合長時間叼斗不嘴酸，裝置助燃網可短時間抽斗不浪費。

Kaywoodie began as a line of pipes offered by KB&B (Kaufman Brothers & Bondy) in 1919 (see also Dinwoodie). Ultimately, KB&B changed its corporate name to "Kaywoodie". It became a brand of S. M. Frank & Co from March 1955.

Kaywoodie seconds: Bentley US, Devonshire

The cloverleaf logo: the round logo (black cloverleaf in white circle  or white cloverleaf in black circle ) was first used in 1937. Up until the late 40's this logo was used on all of the upper grades pipes. The concomitant use of the plain white cloverleaf and the disk inlaid logo continued untill the early 80's.

Up until the late 1940's/early 50's, the logo was on top of the stem. After that the logo was moved to the side of the stem (exceptions exist).

The Drinkless Shellcraft

The white logo has the shape of the Drinkless systeme (see dok) which equipped these pipes from 1924. This Shellcraft has a push tenon and was thus crafted prior to 1930.

No KB&B clover stamped on the shank.

Push tenon and Drinkless stinger

This pipe is marked with "Drinkless" on the shank, on the stem and on the stinger. It doesn't have the KB&B shamrock logo nor any "Kaywoodie" stamping. Nevertheless its caracteristics allow to identify it as an early Kaywoodie:

• A 2 digits shape number (17 = Dublin): period 1924-1929)
• A push tenon: pipe manufactured prior to 1929

The "Premier" line was produced only during a year: 1928

From 1924 to 1929 (about) Kaufmann Brothers & Bondy (KB&B) stamped a 2 digit code on the pipes (29 in this case) to indicate their shape. The fact this pipe dates from this period is also confirmed by a push stem. It illustrates a test period coming first to a Kaywoodie line and followed by the Kaywoodie brand.

Due to its "Drinkless" stamping this pipe is reported in the Kaywoodie section and not in KB&B's.

▲ "KBB" inside clover stamped on the shank was canceled in 1933.

The lack of "PAT. APP. FOR" stamping would indicate the synchrostem patent was allready granted (1932) when this pipe was crafted.

Thus this pipe may be dated rather precisely.

The clover stamp with the KBB initials on the shank indicates a pipe crafted in the old KB&B plant at Union City (NJ) prior to 1933.

The first Super Grains appeared in late 1931 or early 1932. They are the only pipes Kaywoodie produced with the shamrock inlaid in the shank and not on the stem.

Shank embedded logos were stoped by 1938.

Differentiate an early Super Grain from a post WWII Super Grain.

The shape called "President" is a Kaywoodie's distinctive production. It has never been copied.

Until late 1930's pipes were stamped with a 4 digit code (this pipe: 7793).

• The first 2 numbers (77) designate the style or finish.
• The last 2 are the shape numbers (93).
• The numerical code may be reinforced by a letter for variants.

Thus the small "President" pipes are stamped 93S while the larger bear a 93L (see also this Super Grain pipe).

Later Kaywoodie will cancel the 2 first style/finish numbers keeping the 2 last shape numbers and the letter for variants (i.e. Allbriar or Connoisseur).

 

Early Suntan

▲ The "X" that appears to the right of the shape number (7002) was stamped by Kaywoodie when the bowl was replaced under warranty.

Suntan period: 1928-late 1950's

"Made in England" Suntans have been produced more recently.

The color of the stem and/or the finish of the bowl could change: see detailed view for three variants.

The issue with this model was the rhinestones which often came off the bowl.

▲  Among the seven Oversize finishes shown in the 1947 catalog, two were banded: the "Goliath" (Virgin finish) and the "Hercules" (Walnut finish). This pipe seems to be a "Hercules".

The model has a flat bottom (hence "Setter") and is available in panel (this pipe), billiard and poker shapes. It comes without system (stinger) and with a push stem.

 

Shellcraft

Stampings of a Shellcraft pipe crafted in the early 1930s with a Synchro-stem system. The pipe is sandblasted while the early Shellcraft was rusticated. The "drinkless logo" on the stem has been replaced by a clover and a 4 digit shape number has been attributed indicating thus the entry of the Shellcraft into Kaywoodie's lines.

The bit incorporated a 3-way smoke passage with two of the passages terminating in the lip-end of the bit and the third in the notch on the top of the bit (see enlarged picture #3).

▲ This pipe is stamped with a four digit number which situates its production year between 1931 and 1938. Because of the introduction of the "Imported Briar" stamping in 1935, the pipe could have been manufactured between 1935 and 1938.

【KIKO】坦桑尼亞煙斗製造廠出品，石楠木內崁海泡內鍋直式煙斗。

這個產地相當陌生(非洲某國家)，資料顯示與英國GBD有某些關聯 ?

燃燒室內崁海砲石內鍋(新手最愛~~不怕燒毀煙斗)，斗缽噴砂處理。

斗長 : 14.5，  斗高 : 4.5，  斗寬 : 3.3，  斗口 : 1.7 公分。

屬中型斗，一斗菸草可享受30分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

金屬螺紋榫頭(可修正斗嘴精確度)，斗身輕盈適合長時間叼斗不累。

介紹過那麼多國家製造的煙斗，第一次介紹坦桑尼亞這個國家。

對於這個國家老娘一臉矇圈，只能說這是少見的非洲煙斗製造產地。

照老娘猜測...可能英國GBD有涉及技術支援，或是合作關係 ?

但是無損這支煙斗的一切，材料與做工...都非常有水準。

這種石楠木鑲崁海砲石內鍋的煙斗...早年有許多廠家都有生產，

此種好處是海泡內鍋使菸草不直接接觸石楠木，

不會有燒毀燃燒室的恐懼。

對於喜歡狂抽猛吸的斗客或新手，燒毀煙斗是常有的事。

所以早年煙斗製造商發明了此種結合...真厲害 !

保留良好完整度佳，已依手工斗工法工序整體大翻新完畢外觀超優。

The "Prima" line which was introduced in the early 1900s corresponded to the top grade in those times.

The Birmingham Assay Office hallmarks display a "l" year letter which applies for 1910.

Notice the early Comoy's stamp with a tail after the "s". This "Comoy's" joined flowing script canted forward was used from 1900 to about 1919.

The "Comoy's" marking: the arched COMOY'S stamping in upper case script with serifs, apostrophe before the “S,” and the “C” larger than the other letters reaches back to 1917 and has been continued for a short time after WWII.

The country of origin marking: the circular "Made in London" and straight "England" stamp was first used in the late 1940s / early 1950s.

The "C" stem logo: the “three-piece C” was continued until the Cadogan era in the 1980s. Considering the shank stampings we could come to the conclusion the probability this pipe has a replacement stem is significant.

【Stanwell】丹麥知名量產斗廠出品，石楠木製加拿大型直式煙斗。

保存良好完整度優，已依手工斗工法工序整體大翻新完畢外觀很美。

燃燒室與斗缽口沒燒蝕碳化崩塌，斗嘴手工打磨烏黑晶亮沒有咬痕。

斗長 : 14.0，  斗高 : 4.6，  斗寬 : 2.9，  斗口 : 1.7 公分。

屬中型斗，一斗菸草可享受30分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

此斗石楠木瘤年格夠老細密緊實，最後拋光後的鏡面光澤非常理想。

Brand & factory were established in 1942 by Poul Nielsen. The company has been owned since 2000 by Nordisk Tobaks Kompagni A/S.
The factory in Borup crafted all Stanwell pipes from 1965 until 2009. From 2010 on the pipes are crafted by Barontini (Italy) exept for the limited editions.
Production (2007): 115 000 Pipes/year

The Preben Hom factory closed down in late 1985. Poul Winsløw had to start on its own and the first years were tough. Stanwell gave him the opportunity to collaborate by going with them to different exhibitions and finishing pipes. The pipe above is from this period.

Crowned "S" with a dot indicates an acrylic stem. Stanwell started using acrylic for their mouthpieces in 1995. This dot addition has been discontinued.

 

在量產斗的領域Stanwell是丹麥的量產斗大廠，

其產品行銷全世界(名列十大知名斗廠行列)。

在老古董斗的領域裡，其早期的斗非常叫好叫座，

原因是早期石楠木尚未缺料，煙斗木料年格都從30年起跳。

不似近年石楠木老木料挖得快空了，

一般斗廠使用木料年格一降再降(10~15年)。

新木料密度較疏鬆~散熱較快，抽斗容易燙手和燒毀，

所以全球才興起玩早期老古董煙斗的熱潮。

Stanwell斗廠創立於1942年，

但自2010年開始Stanwell煙斗由義大利Barontini製作(限量版除外)。

老古董斗界收藏Stanwell煙斗都集中在1970年前出品的史坦威，

原因無他(早期使用的石楠木瘤確實較好)。

今天釋出的這支老史坦威(加拿大型)木料確實很棒，

這可由最後拋光的鏡面效果證明，

如果是年格較淺組織較鬆軟，拋光效果就差很多囉 !

【FUMO】謎一樣生產製造國出品，石楠木製做噴砂狀雕刻微彎直斗。

保存良好完整度優，已依手工斗工法工序整體大翻新完畢質感超優。

燃燒室與斗缽口沒燒蝕碳化崩塌，斗嘴手工打磨烏黑晶亮沒有咬痕。

斗長 : 14.0，  斗高 : 3.8，  斗寬 : 3.9，  斗口 : 2.0 公分。

屬中型斗，一斗菸草可享受30分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

重量超級輕(應為高山或海岸岩壁石楠)，適合長時間叼斗不致嘴酸。

Misc. Estates: Fumo Small Cut Partially Rusticated Acorn

Fumo has made a fair number of flashy pipes, finish-wise,

and they haven't been slouches when it comes to unusual shapes,

either. Even so I've still seen a fair number that would have looked right

at home among Stanwells or Kriswills of the 1960s,

and this pipe I'd say is one of those, being a handsome Acorn finished

in a mixture of stimulating rustication and warm, smooth finish.

老實講 : 有些煙斗品牌搜尋不到資料時挺失望的，

這是當年沒電腦(紙本記錄)時代的遺憾。

老娘常常會為了搜尋資料...搞到頭髮白了好多根，

本來要放棄此斗的報告文章，但是這支斗的木料實在太棒了 !

不介紹簡直對不起這支斗。

拿到這支斗時因為重量超輕，立馬列入收藏。

試抽過此斗後更驚為天人，這支斗真是"叼斗聖品" !

傳統3mm煙道設計使得此斗超好駕馭，

叼斗時感覺不出啥負擔(重量)，那種舒服感真好。

因為收藏過多所以真對不起此斗(躺在防潮箱十餘年)，

被列入此波釋出名單前，整體大翻新了此斗。

現在的模樣真是漂亮的...又想收回防潮箱裡繼續收藏。

此斗光是這塊石楠木瘤就值回票價，

再看看翻新的細膩度種種細節...絕對值得收藏 !

【Savoy】英國早期煙斗製造廠出品(已關廠)，石楠木製~直式煙斗。

保存良好完整度優，已依手工斗工法工序整體大翻新完畢外觀很美。

燃燒室與斗缽口沒燒蝕碳化崩塌，斗嘴手工打磨烏黑晶亮沒有咬痕。

斗長 : 14.0，  斗高 : 4.7，  斗寬 : 3.5，  斗口 : 2.0 公分。

屬中型斗，一斗菸草可享受45分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

做工非常細緻斗身重量很輕，適合長時間叼斗~~保證不會嘴酸齒搖。

因沒電腦紙本記錄年代，該廠資料已無處找尋(粗估為50年代產物)。

斗身唯一能判讀的是生產國家，煙道上打印London made 607 字樣。

木料年格夠老質地非常細密緊實，

此斗線條和尺寸充滿了英式煙斗的范兒。

這種傳統英式煙斗是許多老手的最愛，老娘就是其中之一。

其實就是種情懷，耳邊彷彿飄起披頭四合唱團的音樂，

老娘對二戰前後的物件特別癡迷，尤其那年代的美眉 !

嘴角叼著煙斗咪個眼，隨老娘天馬行空的穿越...

人生很多不可能的大戲...都可以掛帥當主角。

年代超久遠(沒電腦紙本記錄年代)，原生產國與廠家資料無從查起。

燃燒室與斗缽口沒燒蝕碳化崩塌，斗嘴手工打磨烏黑晶亮沒有咬痕。

斗長 : 15.5，  斗高 : 4.8，  斗寬 : 3.7，  斗口 : 1.9 公分。

屬中大斗，一斗菸草可享受60分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

斗身重量超輕；適合長時間叼斗不累，保存良好完整度優外觀很美。

在老古董煙斗世界常會有些"一頭霧水"的早期煙斗，

在沒電腦的紙本記錄年代又碰到戰亂，整個就斷了線。

義大利早期煙斗製造廠出品(早已關廠)，石楠木製噴砂型微彎直斗。

關閉2.30年的早期斗廠未完成之半成品庫存，後續施工完成在台灣。

配件等級採用的頗高(彩色壓克力夢幻斗嘴)，噴砂後木紋深刻漂亮。

斗長 : 14.5，  斗高 : 4.9，  斗寬 : 3.7，  斗口 : 2.0 公分。

屬中大斗，一斗菸草可享受60分鐘(視有無助燃網或斗主技術增減)。

煙道頭段3mm鑽孔，榫頭中段濾心處3mm設定，斗嘴末端~以2mm收尾。

這種早期已關閉斗廠庫存成品早被吃光，剩下半成品煙斗乏人問津。

下圖即是從義大利寄回台灣，倉庫分類時的檔案照片(皆為半成品)。

老娘特別喜歡這種早期斗廠庫存半成品煙斗，

要的就是早期的斗廠用料年格夠老。

不似近十餘年的一般新斗，年格普遍太淺(組織鬆散)。

做成煙斗後抽斗問題多 : 過燙、容易燒毀、拋光不易.....

老木料細密緊實散熱不致過快，拋光後特別漂亮。

這些門門道道不是從事煙斗製造者~~~

是搞不清楚這些技術問題滴 !

此斗年格夠老噴砂處理後樹紋深邃，

噴砂最大的好處是...幫助散熱，不易燙手...

由面接觸轉變成線或點接觸(手指受熱面積變小)，

平日保養請用豬鬃刷和少量棕梠蠟刷養即可。

Knute of Denmark pipes are said to be made by Karl Erik, see his listing herein.

Karl Erik Ottendahl was born in Aalborg in 1942, just a few miles from the very northernmost tip of Denmark. He began his career as a Lithographer as an apprentice in the craft at the age of 16. While working as an apprentice he began hand carving pipes as a hobby and to give as gifts to his more senior colleagues. He began his career making pipes for various labels in Denmark and the United States. Often he would make the higher grade pipes for a well known brand that was known for their midrange or low end pieces such as Wally Frank. While doing this he administered a factory of fifteen craftsmen. During this period he did make of some of his own handmade pipes, but he felt that the responsibility of managing the factory did not give him the freedom he wished he had.

Other brands confirmed to be from Karl Erik are: Champ of Denmark, HTL, Jobey Dansk, Knute, Golden Danish, Lars of Denmark, Larsen & Stigart (Copenhagen pipe shop), Shelburne, Sven Eghold and Wenhall (for Wenhall Pipes, New York), some Ben Wade and pipes marked IS and IIS.
